A review of the research into art gallery visitors shows that there is a high propensity for Australians to attend cultural venues and events, with around 86% of the population attending at least one cultural venue or event per year. According to the ABS approximately 1 in 5 Australians attend an art gallery – a figure that has been consistent since 2005. This is about the same ratio as those who visit museums, and only slightly less than those who go to popular music concerts.
Here are some recent stats from Museums and Galleries NSW which demonstrate the important economic role of art galleries to regional areas in NSW.

While the economic contribution of a regional gallery is undeniable, it is the social and cultural impact that is its lasting legacy. Providing the spaces for artists to showcase their works, meet other artists and enjoy opportunities for creative discussion are only a few of the many social benefits a regional gallery can bring. The gallery offers a focal point in the community for arts minded people to gather and contribute as artists but also as volunteers, workers and businesses.
