Local tourism data

The issues

In recent years there has been increasing debate around the true value of tourism to regional communities, and the point at which locals resent the presence of tourists at their beaches, shops, carparks and streets.

The issue of “overtourism” has been around for decades, with the problem well documented in academic journals and the media. The past year in particular has seen many vocal incidents of locals protesting against tourists.

Management and solutions

While the issues of overtourism are well documented, solutions must start with good local data to monitor and understand the extent of the issues. Data on the numbers of visitors, where they are coming from and what they are seeking is needed not just when visitors are in over-abundance, but years before.

Through our ongoing work with local government Councils we are now able to combine our knowledge of all available data sources to create a bespoke portal for internal and external stakeholders to view the latest trends in in visitor behaviour and expenditure.

We combine that knowledge with tools and polls of the local community to assess the level of tourism sensitivity felt by the community. The portal can be customised to use your data subscriptions with our specialised databases to create a useful and simple portal that is updated monthly to monitor changes in visitation to your local government area.
